WFTU condolences statement on the air crash in Indonesia

The World Federation of Trade Unions, representing 105 million workers from 130 countries of the 5 continents, expresses its deep sorrow and sincere condolences to the people of Indonesia on the air crash of the Indonesian Sriwijaya Air flight 182.

According to the available information the plane took off from Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta Airport to the Pontianak, in West Kalimantan province on January 9th in the afternoon. The plane, carrying 62 people on board, including several children, lost contact just a few minutes after takeoff. The Indonesian authorities announced that debris of the place were found in the Java Sea.

We call upon the government and competent authorities to intensify the rescue operations with all means. The international class-oriented trade union movement demands an independent and full investigation of the conditions under which the plane of the low-cost air company crashed to the sea. The WFTU relentlessly continues its struggle for the determination and implementation of adequate protective measures in all aspect of people’s lives.
