WFTU solidarity statement with the people of Philippines on Typhoon Rai

The World Federation of Trade Unions expresses its deep sorrow on the effects of the typhoon Rai landfall on Siargao Island on the central east coast of the Philippines resulted in at least 208 dead, hundreds of thousands of displaced people, widespread damage, and flooding. We once again strongly condemn the murderous lack of adequate protective measures for the workers and popular strata, in a country that is frequently hit by typhoons. Our thoughts are with the relatives of the victims, and all the affected people. We demand the immediate ensuring of safe accommodation, food, clothes, and healthcare for all the displaced ones and full compensation for the damages. The WFTU joins its voice with the class-oriented trade union movement in the Philippines and intensifies its struggle for adequate protection measures in all aspects of the people’s lives.
