The WFTU representing more than 105 million workers in 133 countries is expressing its full solidarity and support with the people of Nigeria who have been hit by the worst cholera outbreak in a decade. Cholera has added to a complex web of medical and humanitarian vulnerabilities, coming on top of heightened insecurity, a chronic state of acute humanitarian and medical needs, and the direct and secondary impacts of COVID-19. Government data from a study supported by UNICEF found access to safely managed sanitation services at just 21% nationwide. The country has recorded more than 3,600 deaths from cholera in the last 11 months and 2,977 fatalities recorded from coronavirus since 2020. More than 100,000 suspected cholera cases were reported across the 35 states of Nigeria. While nearly all of Nigeria’s thirty-five states have reported cholera cases in 2021, the vast majority have been concentrated in the six northern states of Bauchi, Kano, Jigawa, Zamfara, Sokoto, and Katsina. Many people in this region are particularly vulnerable—hundreds of thousands have been displaced from their homes by conflict and violence, and many live in conditions with poor sanitation and without safe drinking water. We closely follow all developments in the area and once again express our full solidarity with the Nigerian People. We demand the Nigerian government to take action immediately to help the people to overcome this situation by taking all the necessary measures for the people to have access to clean water, medical treatment and COVID-19 vaccines.
