The WFTU stands by the side of teachers in Zimbabwe

The World Federation of Trade Unions, representing 105 million workers who work and struggle in 133 countries all over the world, reiterates its solidarity with the teachers in Zimbabwe, the Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) that is a WFTU affiliate and the working class of the country. Yesterday teachers staged a protest at the National Social Security Authority Building on the sidelines of the National Joint Negotiating Council meeting, demanding the revival of the classroom and  payment of USD 540 now so teachers can go back to class. Their protest was dealt with violence and the detention of the President of ARTUZ, Obert Masaraure. As the world militant trade union movement, we condemn such practices and demand the respect of trade union and democratic rights and liberties as well as the protection and immediate release of our colleagues. The teachers in Zimbabwe have been fighting over a long period for their rights, for a dignified salary, safe working conditions and the improvement of the education system for their students.
