European Left: Stop the war in Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced overnight the beginning of a Russian “military operation” in Ukraine, following the escalation of tensions between NATO and Russia in recent weeks and the unilateral recognition of the independence of Donetsk and Lugansk. Ukraine is currently under the state of martial law. Heinz Bierbaum, President of the Party of the European Left, said:

“The Party of the European Left strongly denounces this decision, which bears a huge threat to the security of not only Ukraine but for Europe and the world.

The EL rejects any military threat or aggression against a sovereign state. Ukraine’s territorial integrity and independence should be protected. The EL calls for a political and diplomatic initiative to de-escalate the situation immediately. We urge all parties to forgo the military option in favour of international law and diplomacy as the only means of resolving disputes.

This new war in Europe shows the destabilising nature of NATO, whose aggressive presence in Europe must be opposed. Russia’s military attack comes as unprovoked aggression that can not be justified in any way.

What matters now is that we protect all civilians on both sides, and stand by the forces of peace in Ukraine, Russia, and Europe.

Our thoughts are with Ukraine and the innocent women, men, and children who must bear the consequences of this barbaric attack. The Party of the European Left commits to fight for peace and stability in the region.”
