KKE on Stoltenberg’s remarks: NATO fosters Turkish aggression against Greece

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Tuesday urged Greece and Turkey to resolve their disagreements over the Aegean Sea, where the two are at loggerheads over islands and airspace.

“Diverse views and debate are an essential part of our democracies,” the head of the transatlantic military alliance told Greek news agency ANA.

But, he said, “we urge Greece and Turkey to solve their differences in the Aegean in a spirit of trust and Allied solidarity”. Stoltenberg’s comments came two weeks after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared he was ending regular high-level meetings with Greek leaders intended to foster cooperation between the two countries.

In statement (here in Greek) about Stoltenberg’s remarks the Press Office of the CC of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) pointed out:

“After “praising” Greece for the leading role it plays in the full range of NATO offensive plans, the Secretary General of NATO followed the well-known tactic of “equal distances” and called Greece and Turkey to “resolve their differences” for the sake of the NATO alliance, thus fueling the claims of the Turkish state.

This is another proof that in fact NATO doesn’t recognize any borders in the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean, considering these regions as a single NATO area of operations, as well as it is conducting a multifaceted bargain with Turkey which it views as key strategic partner.

Above all, however, it is an additional evidence that NATO, which the Greek governments have long proclaimed as a guarantor and factor of stability, is the number one threat for the people and the basic factor in encouraging the Turkish government’s aggression against the sovereign rights of the country”.
