USB Italy statement: The “freest country in the world” bans the right to abortion

A dark turning point, a violent assault on women’s rights, a leap back more than a century.

Now the various federal states that make up the North American behemoth are free to ban the termination of pregnancy. The U.S. Supreme Court has struck down the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling that had protected the right to abortion for more than 50 years.

Historically, when the Supreme Court has overturned a ruling, it has always done so to expand rights. This time, however, it is abolishing a vital right, finding many conservative states ready to take up the call. Already several of them are applying the Court’s provisions to the letter. Not a word, on the other hand, about the “freedom” to buy devastating weapons, with which massacres are carried out every day in every corner of that great country, as in an eternal Wild West movie, where, however, people really die. This is the “American way of life” of the 21st century, which every day politicians and servant journalists represent as a model of democracy to which to refer. With this ruling for millions of American women, an even darker chapter opens than it already is, in a country where people’s rights are trampled on every day. The women who have the economic possibilities to travel thousands of miles will be able to exercise this right in the states where it will remain guaranteed, the poor ones will have to rely on the “mammas,” a forgotten term that named the people who practiced clandestinely, even in our country, the termination of pregnancy, putting women’s lives at risk, who in fact died by the hundreds every year.Because of this criminal measure, more than half of America’s fifty states may immediately ban the use of pregnancy termination, impacting the lives of tens of millions of women.According to the Center for Reproductive Rights, more than 58 percent of women of childbearing age-a percentage equivalent to forty million people-live in states that oppose abortion. With the dismantling of residual social rights finished, the destruction of civil rights begins as well. Not surprisingly, the first to be affected are women, on an issue representative of a country’s level of civilization. With this decision, the United States becomes one of four nations in the world to cancel the right to abortion. It is an incredible step backward, representative of how reactionary, retrograde and dangerous U.S. imperialism is, even to its own people.USB International department
