Educators and their unions across Belgium are demanding smaller classrooms, lighter workloads, relaxation of non-academic work, and more financing and recruitment in the sector.
The flawed staff evaluation system proposed in the ‘Pact for Teaching Excellence’ aims to permanently install private management in education with pilot schemes that will increase the workload and exploitation of teachers and divert them from their educational missions. Now, with winter approaching, they plan to turn off the heating in some corridors because of fuel shortages.
Teachers’ unions have also called for a countrywide mobilization and strike on 9 November demanding wage increases and measures to address the current cost of living crisis.
The WFTU supports their just demands and intensifies its struggle for universal, public, free, and adequate education for all.
