Palestinian Newspapers: Escalation in Settlers’ Attacks on Olive Harvesters

The ongoing and escalating attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinian farmers and olive harvesters in the occupied West Bank, as well as the funeral of a young Palestinian killed by the Israeli occupation army were highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies Al-Quds, Al-Ayyam and Al-Hayat al-Jadida published on Monday.

The papers said the settlers, protected by soldiers, attacked Palestinian olive harvesters in the north of the West Bank and stole their harvest. On Sunday, settlers stole an amount of Palestinian-owned olive harvest near the town of Kafr al-Dik in the occupied West Bank province of Salfit, according to local sources. Witnesses told WAFA that a group of Israeli settlers from the nearby illegal settlement of Bruchin broke into a farm near the village and stole an amount of olive fruits belonging to local Palestinian farmers. In addition, settlers attacked on Sunday, Palestinian olive-harvesters and farmers in the village of Burin, to the south of Nablus.

Bashar Abu Eid, a local Palestinian farmer, told WAFA that a group of Israeli settlers, guarded by army, from the nearby illegal Israeli settlement of Givat Ronen attacked Palestinian farmers while working in their own lands on the outskirts of the village. He said Israeli soldiers present at the scene did nothing to stop the attack on the olive-harvesting farmers.

On Monday, settlers waged chemical warfare against Palestinian-owned land spraying about 60 olive trees belonging to a Palestinian resident of the town of Jaloud, south of the northern West Bank city of Nablus, with lethal chemicals totally damaging the trees, Ghassan Daghlas, a local official, said today.

Daghlas said the settlers, who have been escalating their attacks against olive trees and Palestinian farmers during this olive harvest season, sneaked into the outskirts of the village and sprayed the trees with the toxic chemical ruining all of them. The olive harvest is a national holiday and a main source of income for thousands of Palestinian households especially in the countryside.

In al-Mazra al-Sharqiya village, west of Ramallah, thousands of people participated in the funeral of 18-year-old Musab Mohammad Nafat, who was shot and killed by occupation soldiers on Sunday. The three papers printed pictures of the funeral. Al-Quds also said that Israel is upset regarding a new Palestinian step at the International Criminal Court against the continuation of its occupation.
