As Greta Thunberg makes her way to Gaza aboard the ‘Madleen,’ the Freedom Flotilla Coalition continues to honor the promise we made to the Palestinians Gaza back in 2008: to sail until Israel’s illegal siege is broken. Greta’s powerful message reminds us that climate justice and social justice are inseparable.
The ongoing violence in Gaza, fueled by the machinery of war, not only perpetuates genocide but also contributes to the global climate crisis. The fossil fuels required for military operations, combined with the environmental destruction caused by warfare, intensify climate change. The conduct of war accelerates the loss of biodiversity, contaminates vital water sources, causes soil erosion, and destroys agricultural land. Bombing and shelling devastate ecosystems, polluting air, water, and soil with hazardous materials like depleted uranium and chemicals. We cannot accept a world that allows such human rights violations and environmental destruction to continue unchecked. Now is the time to demand accountability and stand up for justice, both for Palestine and for the planet.
