SACP message of condolences to families of workers who died at ArcelorMittal’s operation, calls for thorough and speedy investigation on the causes of the accident

19 February 2021 The South African Communist Party (SACP) conveys its heartfelt condolences to the families of three ArcelorMittal workers who died following an accident at ArcelorMittal’s operation in Vanderbijlpark. The SACP also sends its deepest condolences to their fellow colleagues, and commends the solidarity that was expressed by workers who volunteered throughout the night to retrieve the bodies of their fallen compatriots. The SACP firmly stands in support of workers in their call for improved health and safety in the sector. ArcelorMittal employees in this particular plant have shared with the public how their concerns about the safety of the plant went ignored by the employer. The SACP calls for workers to unite against the victimisation of workers who speak out and expose the employer in this regard, and also calls upon our government to step in, in defence of workers’ rights.
