South African Communist Party

10 March 2022 The South African Communist Party (SACP) in Limpopo dips its red banner in honour, in memory and as a tribute to an outstanding freedom fighter and patriot, Comrade Mothebe Richard Mothupi. We received with heavy hearts the news of his passing. Comrade Poo Pharephare, as he was affectionately known in the movement, was a tireless, fearless and indefatigable freedom fighter who spent his entire adult life in service of the people of South Africa. He served them with distinction in all the four pillars of the liberation struggle from secretive underground operations to mass mobilisation to the intensification of the armed struggle to propagation for the political, economic and cultural isolation of the apartheid regime. His life span over sixty years of involvement in the ANC work dedicated to serving the people of South Africa. He started in the mass struggles of the roaring fifties, continued with work when the ANC was banned in 1960; participated in the revitalisation of the trade union, civic and community structures in the 1970s; was instrumental in the emergence of the UDF in 1983 and the formation of CONTRALESA. He worked throughout the then Transvaal mobilising, organising and conscietising  communities around grievances such as high rents, low wages, forced removals, bantustans, vigilante violence, land hunger, detentions without trial, dummy urban councils and so on. This endless and fearless work led him to be fluent in almost all the eleven languages of South Africa. He was a real all-rounder! He was a true combatant for life and patriot to the end! Throughout his life, Poo Pharephare, served the struggling people of South Africa in MACA, ASRA, Moutse, UDF, ANC, ANCVL and many others. He also served for more than a decade as a Member of the Limpopo Provincial Legislature along with his contemporaries Veterans John Kgwana Nkadimeng, Rashaka Frank Ratshitanga, Lesibe Isaac Maphoto, Tlou Theophilus Tsholo, Ratshivanda Samson Ndou, Mmakwena Lydia Komape and Boy-Otto Jacob Marule. He was awarded the Order of Luthuli in silver for excellent contribution to the struggle for liberation and the building of a new South Africa. May the soul of this giant of giant, an outstanding freedom fighter and patriot rest in peace! ROBALA KA KHUTSO POO PHAREPHARE! A COMBATANT FOR LIFE, A PATRIOT TO THE END!!
